Two statements really stood out to me during this chapter. The tide has turned in the book. Have you noticed it?
If we say that the “big thing” isn’t the “main thing,” then we must reflect that in how we spend our time. (p104)
This is one of the reasons why we only gather two times a month.
The other statement is a paragraph at the end of the chapter...
The point of this discussion is not to judge this traditional church structure, to call it bad or out of date. We simply want to show that this structure of attractional church makes it very hard to communicate, show, or create a place of belonging where the whole gospel can be discovered. It’s not a matter of the heart; it’s simply that the structure limits missionality and the ability to be incarnational as a community. (p105)
For me, the call to follow Jesus, is more about a lifestyle shift in paradigm. It's not about getting the right information and believing the right set of facts in a sea of alternative options. Following Jesus is about following a way of life. In so doing, we will be missional and incarnational in our lifestyle. The local church must find ways to allow this incarnational community to flourish in her midst rather than continue to struggle in the fringes of "the ministry." We have the luxury of being completely focused on this approach because we are a church-start.
Thoughts? Agree? Disagree?
